Army.Navy/Merchant Navy records (here and in London.) Useful for finding information of an ancestor's military or maritime service.
Testaments (Wills)Deeds Useul for finding details of other family members etc.
Property records Useful for finding details of other family members, ownership of property etc.
Land and Estates Useful for finding information about family moves and year to year changes in family fortunes etc. (Rent Rolls, etc.)
Judiciary records Useful for finding details of trial proceedings - with possibilty of finding other family members, addresses etc.
Old newspapers (Obituaries, death notices & events.) Useful for finding details of an indivdual's life, names of other family members, addresses etc.
Non Conformist denomination records Useful when an ancestor was not a Church of Scotland adherent.
Monumental Inscriptions Useful for finding other family members, addresses etc.
Kirk Session Records Useful for finding details of illegitimate births - fathers' names, addresses etc.
Old Maps Useful in finding properties. In a rural situation a sequence of maps can show the disappearance of farms and other holdings and changes in the spelling of farm names e.g. Anglicisation from Gaelic.
University, school and professional Organisation Records. Useful in finding parents' names, addresses and careers.
City Directories Useful in finding sequences of occupation of property in the major cities of Scotland. Can be used to indicate a possible death date of an individual. |
